Before making the preliminary film we had to plan it by brainstorming and storyboarding. By planning it we were able to come up with ideas of where we were going to show certain camera angles and where and how the title sequence will be shown. Whether it being after the scene is shown or before, by using this we learnt more about the conventions of film openings and when it is appropriate for the title to appear.
Storyboard:
To show our use of storyboarding we used an animatic. We drew out what we were going to film as well as writing about it, this was effective as it gave us a blueprint. It also made it easier for when filming was going to take place.
Filming:
In that lesson we had to film a sequence, making sure we used at least one match cut, an example of shot/reverse shot and showing our understanding of the 180 degree Rule by not breaking it. This term refers to the rule that once a spatial relationship has been confirmed with the establishing shot, no close-up will cross the imaginary line drawn between those two actors until a new line (or axis) has been established, usually through another establishing shot.
In our priliminary film and our film "Reminisce" we used foley sound. We made our own sound and used sound from Soundtrack Pro. For example in our priliminary film we used foley sound for the door opening and closing. We made our own sound by recording it on a flip camera. We also did this for "Reminisce" as we recorded foley sound such as me walking so it could be used to add effect to the scene where Victoria (the killer) enters the room. We also used foley sound for when the knife drops on the floor. we did this to add tension and to also make it more effective as it was also done in slow motion.
Soundtrack Pro was also used to create the soundtrack for our film to make it realistic as these are one of the conventions of an opening of a film. When planning we brainstormed and came up with ideas before creating our storyboard, after coming up with ideas and also pitching ideas we then decided that it was time to do a storyboard. In both storyboards we displayed the key moments of where we would used certain camera shots. For example for when the killer (Victoria) in "Reminisce" is going through the pictures we stated that we would use close ups to make it more effective and also when she looks at the camera after looking at a particular picture we would use an extreme close up to emphasis on this. This is similar to the preliminary film as in this film we used a close up of Dilan's hand on the handel of the door. In the story board we drew this out and used it in our film because we though it would be effective as it emphasised on the tension and made it more suspicious for the audience to watch. We also used title sequences in both films for example in the preliminary film we used a title sequence at the beginning as we showed the title first which was 'Report' and showed the actors names after, in comparison to our film 'Reminisce' where the title sequence was shown differently. For example the title of the film was shown last were as the actors names were shown before hand.
Across both productions I learnt about the use of technologies such as sound track pro and final cut pro to make an opening of a film affective and realistic. The use of all these technologies allowed me to have a bigger insight of how the film industry makes films and by using different aspects of these technologies can appeal to different types of target audiences. Overall I also learnt that it is hard work as the editing and camera angles can be hard process at times but with commitment it can be rewarding, it was also enjoyable as I learnt how to make a film and I now know the key conventions of an opening film and how to make it a good one.
