Target audience is the group of people that the film is aiming at. An example of this is romantic films which may be aimed at females aged 18 - 40. This is because they are most likely to show relationships, or the or the perfect relationship whch in some cases appeals to women who are either single or married. The movies poster can also identify the target audience. The poster may show the two main acotrs that are playing the love interests. For example the poster for the film Wimbeldon shows the main actors Paul Bettany and Kirsten Dunst.
Another example of this is "Titanic" which features the main characters of the film, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
