Filiming prelim

when doing the 180 degree rule i had to make sure the positioning of the camera was right so both chracters was at the centre or the camera. also i avoided  zooming and panning by using more close up shots.

prelim evaluation

In class we was given an assignment with a brief of making sure to use at least one match cut, an example of a shot reverse shot and showing our understanding of the 180 degree rule without breaking it.Our sequence had to follow the story line of one character opening a door, walks into the room, sits down opposite the other character and they share a few lines of dialogue.

our first step was to make an animatic story board showing what shots we wanted as well as including the shots in the brief. along with the shots we showed the positioning of the characters. when discussing and planning our story board it was clear in our group that we wanted the sequence to be suspicious at the start, so to do this we agreed that we would not shot characters 2 face until halfway of the sequence, and to crate tension we would only hear the voice of this character. the story board was effective because when if came to filming the sequence we knew exactly where to start and the shots needed to be done. However when it came to filming my group realised that we did not plan a dialogue for the sequence which was a disadvantage because we had to stop the filming to work out the lines for the characters and even at some parts we had to improvise. durng filming we also realised that certain sounds such as door slamming and the papers had to be done louder just in case we couldn't find a Foley sound to match. Our group finished filming in a short period because of the help from all the shots we planned in the story board so we got that done quickly.

In the editing process we used final cut pro to start putting all the shots together. the clips had to be cut down because of countdown to start up or even some we cut them down because some parts matched closer to the other clips, there was even one point that we only wanted dialogue without the clip being used 'when character 2 said sit down, so we had to separate that clip in 2 part. another problem that occurred during the editing process it that we realise that some match cuts didn't fit or some parts was jumpy or even the camera was not angled straight. when the editing process was finished we watched it over and discovered that we didn't like the way our sequence finished but we didn't have any clips that matched to end it. another problem that was noticed is that the unwanted background noise in the clips, so in the end we silenced them out.

when adding text such as credits in final cu pro we kept it short and simple following film conventions, we added the title and the two main characters and the producer. we didn't add credits such as editors because we felt that it would be a repeat of names as there was only 3 of us in the group. adding credits did take some time because we had to work out the font, positioning and colour of the text and finally the timing. our timing of the appearance of the text had to be consistent not taking up too much time and equally not disappearing too quickly. although this process could have been improved by adding more conventions such as company and making the text stand out more.

once we finished on final cut pro we exported the sequence on soundtrack pro to add Foley sound and background music. this part of editing was difficult and did take up much time. we wanted to find sounds/music that sounds suspicious and creates tension, in the end we only fund one background music that we used in the beginning of the sequence and throughout but put the volume down to hear the dialogue. we also used foley sounds such as the door slamming to exagerate the tension. soundtrack pro was effective because it started to look and sound like a film with the music.

overall i think my group did a good job although there was some problems along the, but this help is learn and improve for when it comes to actually filming our thriller sequence

Inspriration: Thriller Sub Genre

The thriller sub genre that has inspired us the most are psychological thrillers. Psychological thrillers is a specific sub genre of the broad ranged thriller with heavy focus on characters. However, it often incorporates elements from the mystery and drama genre, along with the typical traits of the thriller genre. In addition to drama and mystery, many psychological thrillers contain elements of, and often overlap with, the horror genre, particularly psychological horror.

We have chosen this sub genre as we believe that this is the one sub genre that creates the most suspence and leaves the audience wondering about how certains things were done. Psychological thrillers such as
"Fatal Attraction" 1987, build up suspense throughout the film which makes it appealing to watch for the audience. The film focuses on happily married New York lawyer Dan Callagher has an affair with his colleague Alex, and the two enjoy a love weekend while Dan’s wife and kid are away. But Alex will not let go of him, and she will stop at nothing to have him for herself.

Intertextuality

Intertexuality is the term used to describe when films borrows certain things from films. The audience may recongnise certain camera angels al well as asects of mise en scene, sound and editing that have been featured originally in another film.

An example of the use of Intertextuality is Scary Movie 2 using a scene from the Exorcist.

The Exorcist is a 1973 horror film directed by William Friedkin, adapted by William Peter Blatty from his 1971 novel of the same name. The book was inspired by the exorcism case of Robbie Mannheim,[3][4] dealing with the demonic possession of a young girl and her mother’s desperate attempts to win back her daughter through an exorcism conducted by two priests.

Scary Movie 2 borrows the famous head turning part in one of the earlier scenes.

Scary Movie 2 is a 2001 horror comedy parody film. It is the second film of the Scary Movie franchise. Though part of the first Scary Movie's tagline read "...No sequel," this film's tagline compensated by adding "We lied".

Ideas For Our Film Opening

We as a group have decided that we are going to produce a physcological film opening. We chose to do this as we felt that this would be more effective and would have a bigger impact on our audience.

We have decided to use a discrete opening as it will give hints to the audience about the type of film we have chosen.

Target Audience

File:Wimbledon film poster.jpg
Target audience is the group of people that the film is aiming at. An example of this is romantic films which may be aimed at females aged 18 - 40. This is because they are most likely to show relationships, or the or the perfect relationship whch in some cases appeals to women who are either single or married. The movies poster can also identify the target audience. The poster may show the two main acotrs that are playing the love interests. For example the poster for the film Wimbeldon shows the main actors Paul Bettany and Kirsten Dunst.

Another example of this is "Titanic" which features the main characters of the film, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

Preliminary Match Cut Exercise Evaluation

In our lesson we had to film a sequence making sure we used at least one match cut, an example of shot/reverse shot and showing our understanding of the 180 Degree Rule by not breaking it.

Firstly, we were given the brief that  stated what we should do and what we should include in our scene. Before filming we produced storyboards showing the various shots and camera angels we had to use. This was effective as we were able to have a blueprint of what we were supposed to do which also made the task easier.

We then went to film, and filmed a character opening a door then walking into a room and then sitting opposite another character as they then share a few lines of dialogue. We did this in the style of a thriller by having a close up of the door handle when Dilan put her hand on the door handle. I think that this was effective as it added tension and suspense to the scene. When we finished filming we took sections from it and pasted it together on "Final Cut Pro" which then made the "Anamatic".

After that we edited it so we could have a soundtrack. We looked at different "Foley Sounds" on "Soundtrack Pro" as well as using our own sound effects, for example the sound of a door closing and papers getting scattered on a table. using these effects made the scene more intriguing to watch as it made it realistic.

Sound was used to make the scene come alive. This is effective as it also follows the conventions of film openings. As a group we used film titles at the beginning and used it in a suitable order, for instance we showed the title of our piece first which was "Report" followed by the directors name, Saskie Logan and then the actors names.

Final Prelim

This is our final video of our prelim exercise

editing of prelim

After we filmed our scenes we edited it on final cut pro to produce a opening scene, to do this to put together the shots and cut some scenes out to make the film.

These are all of the shots we took during filming,  some of the clips are extra or didn't fit with the storyboard so we didn't use it when making the film.

Editing using Final Cut Pro
We put the clips together in order following the storyboard, however some parts had to be eliminated to match each other.
Adding text on Final Cut Pro
We added the titles for the film

using sound track pro to add foley sounds and
 music to accompany opening

'watching' documentary on opening films

Foley sound

Foley sound are the sound effects added to a film in post production. These extra sounds are recorded speratly and then added in the editing process, this is done so when added the sounds are much more clearer than just using the original sound when editing that may be weak.

these sounds could include
-drips of water from a tap
-runing
-slammed door
etc

structure of film openings

There are different types of structures for film openings. the three basic structures are;

A Discrete opening

this structure is where the title sequence is appeared over a black screen, showing credits to casts, producers ans actors. throughout this structure there would normally be no pictures or links about the film, no information is given away. however is the are short glimpse of pictures or videos it usually does not have any relation to the film but it does give a sense of what type of film it is.

An example of this would be Se7en

A narrative opening

this usually is an opening structure with the titles running throughout with no action interrupting in between.
the opening credits is shown closely together in terms or timing

an example of this would be Panic room

Titles over a blank screen

this structure is usally followed by a narrative opening. the opening credits are shown over a blank screen with sound in the background, th the film would start.

an example of this would be Donnie Darko

Extra- 'stylised editing'

the taking of pelham 123 2009

straight away in this opening structure we can see the editing used to give  stylized effect. the company production logo id edited by having it zoomed in from a small box with sound effect that lonks t the theme of the movie. the pening credits are slidded arcoss the screen as the effect of a train. after the beginnging of the film is either sped up in pace of slowed down into slow motion.

Genre, Sub-genre and Audience

We looked at different types of thrillers, for example there are:

  1. Comedy Thriller = Scary Movie
  2. Horror Thriller = Jeepers Creeper
  3. Sci-Fi Thriller =Alien vs. Predator
  4. Psychological Thriller = Frozen
  5. Action Thriller = Killers
  6. Political Thriller = Law Abiding Citizen
  7. Supernatural Thriller = The Others
Thrillers tend to be cross genre films. "Thriller" is the kind of genre that can go with a lot of possibilities to make the film successful.

Film Genre and the Cinema in 2010

1) How many suspense films were released in 2010?  There were 38

2) In total, how much did these suspense films take, gross, to the nearest million?     40,000,000

3) Which genre of film had the highest gross in 2010?     Action/Adventure

4) What was the most popular family genre in 2010?   Animation

5) Write a short paragraph of about 200 words about how the figures for suspense genre films compare with other genres in 2010.

In 2010, the figures for the suspense genre were higher in comparison to the documentary genre figures. This shows that although there were more documentary films in that genre released, there was a difference between the amount of suspense films released and the documentary films released. Suspense films had a total of 28 films making a profit of £42,441,123. The documentary films however had released 57 films and made a profit of £1,834,067.
This shows that documentary films were less popular to the audience compared to suspense films. Also the percentages show that in the box office ratings, documentary films were only 0.2% and suspense films were 4.2%. Horror films however had produced two films before the suspense films but still had a higher gross rate of £45,131,491 and 4.5% at the box office. In conclusion, from the information I gathered that suspense films are more favorited than documentary films with audiences and that horror films tend to be more popular than suspense films.

Genre
In film, genre is used as a method based on similarities in the narrative elements from which films are constructed.
Genre is a category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content. There are so many genres; Action, Adventure, Biography, Comedy, Crime, Documentary, Drama, Family, Fantasy, Film noir, Game show, History, Horror, Music, Musical, Mystery, News, Reality Tv, Romance, Sci-Fi, Sport, Talk show, Thriller, War, Western.
Sub genre
A sub genre is a category of a specific genre of a film. Sub genre have their own distinctive subject matter and style. These are some of the thriller sub genre:
Horror Thriller
Supernatural Thriller
Psychological Thriller
Romance Thriller
Action Thriller
Political Thriller
Crime Thriller
The sub genre that inspired me the most was Psychological/Supernatural Thriller. The film i have chosen to analyse is The " Sixth Sense" This film falls into the "Thriller" genre; its specific category is psychological thriller. A boy who communicates with spirits that don't know they're dead seeks the help of a disheartened child psychologist. Well I would firstly say that it appears to be promoting a horror film. It's just the presence of ghosts and constant speak of death kind of comes across as too scary and supernatural.

Thriller target audience

The target audience depend on the kind of thriller film. Like all other genres there are sub genres that give a specific target audience. The age group of the target audience is around 16-25 years.
The Silence of the Lambs opens by introducing to FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster), a student who has been selected by Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn), the head of the FBI's behavioral science unit, to help in the pursuit of a serial killer called Buffalo Bill, who skins his victims after murdering them.

Silence of the lambs and No country for old men are both considered as thrillers and rated (R), their target audience was probably for the young male adults.

Silence of the lambs is an 18, and no country for old men is a 15, this is because Silence of the lambs has a sub-genre to it which is horror, so there is suspected gore. Whereas with no country for old men is more of just a thriller.

re- editing of arlington road

To begin we put the list of different clips that we had, in order to make the editing easier, as we would not have to go through all the clips to find the one we were looking for as it is already ordered.

Cutting and editing the clips to match was something that took us a little bit more time as what we originally thought was a simple fit, was not, as so we had to cut pieces of the clips off and in some cases completely saw clip around to create a good fit.

Adding a title and text also took some time because we had decided that we wanted all text to appear for 5 seconds, but we also had to keep in mind that what was happening in the clip was constantly changing. and at times did not fit in with the text and look good (professional) or sometimes the colors clashed and the text could not be seen.

This went on to affect the whole editing the title; choosing the font, size, colours and positioning all was to make sure it fit the clip nicely and looked professional.

we decied to have minimum effects (transitions) for titles, just simple fades, as the clip was already edited alot and we did not want to over do it. (keeping the professional look)

The Structure of Thriller Openings

                            There are three basic structures that are followed in film openings which are;

A narrative opening with the titles running throughout:

Narrative openings are good as they give the audience a preview of the setting or the kind of setting as well as giving an effect that opens the film in a good way and this sets the scene. Normal have an environmental feel to it for example a camera panning around a mountain or around the world. This kind of opening usually has the titles running throughout with nothing nterrupting in between. It usually gives us an idea of whats happening or what the film may involve unlike discrete openings. In this opening of  "The Shining" we can see a car making a journey somewhere.

Another example of openings are discrete title sequences. These kind of openings are stylised and heavily edited.
"Se7en" is a film that uses a discrete film opening as it doesn't have any storyline or images that gives it away. The opening of this kind of film is most likely to show objects or things that may either feature in the film or may have something to do with the film. Casts names and credits still remains the same. These types of  audience have no clue of why their being shown these particular types of pictures, there is no narrative either, making it a discrete title.

Current Ideas (Thought Process *1)

So Far...

-we want to a narrative Opening with a voice over

-Physiological Type theme to go with it.
-Editing colours to -Black&White - normal . throughout to ass to the thriller theme of the opening.
-only one character to be introduced.
-no dialogue from the character
-we want an emphasis on the props (hopefully that will help to give clues to the plot)

Things we need to discuss ...
-Type of sound we want.
-what type of character we want
- props needed
-editing style (forexample - fast cuts?)
-shot types

research on target audience

psychological thriller target audiences

the target audience for most psychological thrillers are 18+, this is because it normally includes viloence and psychological issues and explicit scenes that may disturb younger viewers.

example

the film 'silence of the lambs' age rating is 18 and over because of the sexual and violence content. the movie is discribed as grusome and brutality. The plot is mainly of a psychopathic killer who kills woman and then skins them as his trade mark.

story board for killers remake

story board

our group had to make some adjustments as our group is all girls

the opening is a ong shot of the resturant and surroundings, with people around

medium close up of two people talking. a two shot is used

a medium shot of stalker sitting on chair staring at character 1
close up of facial expression of character 1
mid shot of character 3 (stalker) walking away making eye contact with chacacter 1 leaving a book behind.
then there will be a close up of book on chair

-close up of character facial expression again
-mid shot of him character 1 leaving character 2
-close up of character 1 picking uo the book
-point of view/ character 1 reading th note in the book
-character one walking away from the chair

research on Psychological films

psycological thrillers create suspence that makes the audience think, understand or create meaning towards the films. majority of the time the suspence or mental nature comes from one main character, where characters resolves conflicts with their own mind, usually this conflict is to understand what happened to them and why they are in such a mental state.

Themes of psycoogical thrillers
  • reality
  • perception
  • mind
  • existance/purpose
  • identity
  • death

examples psycological thrillers

Memento

The main character suffers from short-term  memory loss and uses notes and tattoos to remember information in order to find the man that killed his wife. what makes this film so rememarable is the use of polaroid in order for his to remember his action and surrounding.

Inception

The theme of this fiml would mind and perception. A world where technology allows the chartacters to invade peoples dreams and change or influence them on a choice. throughout this film there is a number of mind blowing suspence and even some confusion to make the viewers think and try and keep up to speed

Seven
two detectives hunts in search for a serial killer whos uses the seven deadly sins as a motif to kill people. this film involves some relgious elements but twists them in the mind of a evil and mentally unstable murderer. this coveys the theme of mind, having a certain mind frame can lead people to do anything

Pie chart

I did extra research to find out thriller sub genre was more popular with veiwers. from the pie chart above it is clear that psychological thilers dominate the mos views, this could be because the mojity of films from this sub genre incorporates elements from mystery and drama genre.

Poster

On the tube today I saw this poster and immediatly knew the genre was crime / action. You can tell this by the clothing worn by all characters. The lady is wearing a leather trench type coat which makes her seem like a investigator..... *incomplete*

12. Erika, Nathan, Poppy, Charlene from 283goswell on Vimeo.

The mise en scene used is very interesting, the costume used for the girl with blood on it is effective as the white dress stands out the blood and catches the viewers attention, as the audience spots out the bright  red on the plain white costumes. Also the lighting used makes the white stand out because the lighting was dark so it emphasis the dress. One other good thing about the opening was that they used a black background to view the text which cuts though the opening throughout the scene it creates more affect because it makes the audience think about whats going to happen next and doesn't make the video to long.

I think that this opening was good as they explored the conventions of film openings wells. An example of this is at the beginning where "CANDI STUDIOS" is shown. This is effective as it shows the distribution of it as well using font and colour to show the nature of the film. The colours used are white and red. White connotes purity and red connotes danger, this works well as it shows that their film may be a battle between good and bad. The opening also shows their "production team", "SINISTER PRODUCTIONS". This is effective as the font is red and gritty which tells the audience that it is definitely a thriller that may explore elements of horror.

It then shows the directors names, which is typed in the same way the production teams name was. I believe that they achieved making the opening credits look very realistic as they used many features that make the opening piece good. The crew and cast names are also shown after this. All of the credits are feature on a black background. This is effective as it gives the opening a dark and twisted effect making the audience realise what type of film they'll be watching. The transitions from different scenes fade at a fast pace into black. This shows how the films will be.

Also the locations give an effect as it contrasts. The boy sitting on a bench and the unknown person that seems to doing "something evil" creates a sense of dramatic irony as we know what the are doing but he doesn't. The reason why this is effective is because it may effect the boy sitting on the bench.

This is a Discrete opening as the dream is almost telling a completely separate story.

Good Points :

  1. It has a conventional title sequence where it introduces the production and distribution companies first and then went on to introduce the main people starring in the film.
  2. it borrows a few horror elements which manages to work effectively in adding a more thrilling feeling to the text.
  3. Its had a lot of editing and almsot no dialogue which made it look more professional.
  4. There was plenty of close ups (at the person at the table moving pictures around we didn't see the whole of him we just saw what he was doing. Also we saw lots of close ups of the little girl - eg - her swinging her legs *only the legs were shown* and the blood on the person's hand)
  5. Nearer to the end of the opening the edits become faster cut, but only after we hear a girls voice saying "you did this" automatically insinuating to the audience that was was done was bad also because the girl was being dragged about and there was blood everywhere
  6. The sound used in the opening was very effective as it was almost the perfect sound for a little girl only it has a creepy sense to it which complemented the fact that the little girl was in the woods along covered in a blood stained dress. This clearly reflected the genre of the movie -Thriller. I actually found it quite thrilling. The colour editing (black & white in some scenes) and smooth fading transitions also add to this.
  7. The costumes used by this group was perfect as it was clearly brought/made with the intention of using it for this production, which really managed to bring out a more professional feeling to it, and it did not just look like a opening made by a bunch of students.

Health and Safety

How to safely use the cameras /protect them.

It is important to know this as it ensures that everyone in the groups knows how to operate the cameras and does not damage them as they are costly.

How to use:
  1. Always keep cameras protected from the rain. (For example keep away from rain/moisture to avoid damage)
  2. Treat with care. (Use the cameras in a sensible manner and safe environment)
  3. Always hold correctly with care
  4. Always return camera to college in good condition and on time

Advice on using camera when filming:

  1. Do not zoom and pan the camera during filming because it doesn’t look effective and professional, instead it was suggested that we use various camera shots e.g. close up, long shot etc to give more detail
  2. Check that the camera positioning and at right angle. (For example make sure the actor is mainly in the center of the camera not leaving to much space.)
  3. When filming, make sure the lighting is not to dark. (The position of the actor or mise en scene could affect this)

We were also shown:
  1. How to turn the camera on
  2. How and where to insert memory card in correct slot (A), so our work is saved directly to memory for us to transfer onto hard drive
  3. How to zoom using various functions such as manual zoom or the zoom lever
  4. How to turn the camera from manual to auto
  5. How to set up the tripod with the camera securely in place, by making sure the camera is locked into place onto the tripod. (The tripod is used so filming is more accurate, straight and balanced)

AUDIENCE (& Genre)

 Horrible Bosses
Genre: Comedy

The target audience for this film is adults, who enjoy watching comedy.

‘Horrible Bosses’ is a crime comedy film. It stars  Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey, and Jamie Foxx. 6 actors that are well known for their roles in Comedy Movies which lets the audience know that it will definitely be a Comedy. These well know comedy actors already have a fan base of comedy watchers who are certainly a target audience for this film.

This poster shows a stereotypical looking criminal/thug (Leather Jacket, Tattoos and a toothpick in mouth) in the front and three men at the back who look like average men that most probably would wouldn’t be getting in to crime (especially murder) the three men look slightly startled but clearly insistent on killing their bosses. This in itself lets the audience know that the movie will be Comedy/Crime. Crime because of the criminal in the front (Jamie Fox) and Comedy because of the three men who look like they don’t know the last think about committing such a big crime but will be killing their bosses (which makes the audience assume it will be a funny journey in which the make many obvious mistakes.)

Genre and Sub-Genre

Genre is a way of characterising films so that the audience know what type of film they are about to watch. For example a horror genre will immediately let you know that the text you are about to watch is likely to be scary. There is also something called sub-genre which involves other categories which define in more detail such as for example a comedy/ thriller or a drama/ romance these are all sub genres which go alongside the films main genre.

Sub-genre in simple terms is a genre within a genre, for example, ‘The Great Escape’ and 'Fair game' are both thrillers but 'Fair Game’ is a crime thriller so it has a genre within a genre.

 'Fair Game'

Genre: Thriller
Subgenre: Crime.

The target audience for this film is most likely males aged to 27+ who enjoy a thrillers and detective/crime movies.

Significations in the poster:
  • ·         The central intelligence logo watermarked onto the poster and the man in the background holding a gun – shows the audience that its thriller/crime film.
  • ·         The clothing the man and women are wearing. The stereotypical idea is that detectives wear black trench coats or smart suits to work. This is used to give the audience a stronger sense of crime.
  • ·          The writing in red beneath the title that states 'wife, mother, spy' which not only tells the audience that she is a Spy, but lets the audience know that movie will be centred around her, which is also clear from the he being right in the centre of the poster.
